Banksy

Banksy is an anonymous street artist in England. His art mostly has a dark humor to it, his work has a lot to do with political and social some-tsk and ideas. I’ve watched videos describing his work as  in a sense, almost mocking the art world. He also places his work in very public ‘viewable’ places which I
feel in a way ties into the art.

Recently Bank’s piece entitled ‘Girl with Balloon’ was put up for auction at a London art market. The piece was sold to the highest bidder for 1.4 million dollars. Immediately after the piece was sold the people in the auction would see the painting self destruct, and shred itself. After the shredding a video  was released on Banksy’s Instagram showing a video of how he built the shredder into the painting.

I think what Banksy did with his work was revolutionary, and kind of a big slap in the face to the art community. I feel like he did what he did to the painting to say something, something that seems to have so much value can be taken away just like that in a split second with no one expecting it. I also feel like he might be trying to say ‘it’s just art’ in a way, even though he might put a lot of thought into the piece, I think he is trying to tell people to look at it and interpret what his message is in his piece and not just see it as an amount of money.
